our history

Cork ARC House At Night

Cork ARC Cancer Support House was born from a shared vision: to bridge the gap in cancer support services and provide a place of comfort, care, and understanding for those affected by cancer in the Munster region.

In 2001, a dedicated group of individuals formed a Board of Trustees and set out to create what would become Cork ARC Cancer Support House. With the support of the Department of Health, we were granted the use of ‘Cliffdale’ on O’Donovan Rossa Road. A full refurbishment was undertaken, transforming the space into a warm, welcoming sanctuary where people could find solace and support. In 2003, we opened our doors, and from day one, it was clear that Cork ARC was meeting a vital need.

As demand for our services grew, so did our vision. In 2017, after years of searching for a larger space, we purchased Sarsfield House on Sarsfield Road. Following an extensive redevelopment project in 2019, this 8,000 sq. ft. building became our new home—a haven of care, where those affected by cancer can find the support they need in a safe and soothing environment.

cork arc bantry – reaching west cork

Recognising the unique challenges faced by those living in rural areas, Cork ARC Bantry was established in 2015 to bring our services closer to the people of West Cork. Before this, many patients and families had to travel long distances to access support. Now, with in-house services available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as remote support running Monday to Friday, we are ensuring that no one in West Cork has to face cancer alone. By bringing cancer support directly to the community, Cork ARC Bantry helps reduce the burden of travel and isolation, ensuring that those in West Cork can access the care they need, when they need it.

Today, both Cork ARC Cancer Support House in Cork City and Cork ARC Bantry offer a confidential and supportive space where people who have had a cancer diagnosis and their families can find comfort, guidance, and professional support. Our dedicated team along with our highly trained volunteers provide a range of free services, tailored to support individuals at every stage of their cancer journey, ensuring that no one has to face cancer alone.

testimonials

It helped to know that my grief is normal and that other people experience similar feelings.

The minute I walked through the door I knew I had done the right thing, I felt myself relax.

I could never draw or paint, yet Art Therapy allowed me to express more than I ever could have in words. I loved the freedom to play with the art materials.

You could be sitting at home, saying you don’t want to do it, but the confidence Cork ARC gives you rubs off and you just end up doing it with the group.

I walked a lot and was very fond of exercise, but I had never been to the gym. Being with other guys at the ‘Get Active’ programme really turned my life around. It’s like a new beginning.

The minute I walked in the door of Cork ARC, I felt a peace come over me. The house gave me a place where I could feel supported and safe.
